How do you start a vision board and why do you need to make one?

I have always had a curious mind and a thirst for new knowledge.  Have you read the book ‘Outlier’ apparently it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at a new skill! This means, any talent can be acquired and any skill can be improved with determination and discipline. We often hear about the significance of developing vision boards as a basis of accomplishing our goals. Vision boards are incredibly valuable when you are creating your goals and dreams for the following year. It’s a great tool for goal setting, visualisation and clarity.

Creating vision boards can help you strengthen your visualization practice. Vision boards are a valuable tool, giving you direction with what kind of life you want to live. The reason dream boards or vision boards are so effective are because they serve as an image of your future life.

The images you use, represent your dreams and your goals. Neuroscience research shows that the brain responds strongly to emotions and visual stimulation. By creating the images and putting them somewhere you can see them daily, will actually strengthen your intrinsic motivation to achieve success. The famous saying “A picture is worth a thousand words,” indeed holds true here. The visual representation of our dreams and ideas gives a clear direction to where we are heading. There are various other benefits of creating vision boards. If you have written down your dreams and goals on paper or in your notes section of your phone, it is time for you to create this visually. I’ve written this blog post to guide you in making your very own vision board.

Chase the vision. Not the  money, the  money will end up following you.

How do you utilise a vision board for goal setting?

The best way to accomplish your goals is to put them on top of your list. You may have heard before “What gets scheduled, gets done!” When you’re clear about what you are looking for and how you’re going to achieve your goals, there’s really no stopping you! Vision boards are a great tool to help you achieve success. Goals cannot be achieved in a day or two, it takes time and you do it slowly by moving closer to them. With everything in life the process is ‘Consistency over Intensity.’ What I mean by that, is it’s more beneficial you doing small bite size goals every day to get you a step closer to your dream life versus spending 8 hours once a year to try and achieve everything on your list! By placing a vision board somewhere in your room will enable you to see the progress and keep you accountable. Seeing your vision board daily will prompt you to visualize your ideal life on a habitual basis. Sometimes we can have goals that hold us back due to Limiting beliefs. If this is true for you, we encourage you to download our free resource below.

Why is the bedroom a good place to put your vision board?

From a scientific standpoint whatever you are seeing just before bed and when you first wake up, mows down new neural pathways in the brain because your brain is the most flexible and malleable at this time. In science, we call it a ‘Theta Brain Wave.’

Theta Brain Wave: Your brain is malleable and flexible, in a dreamlike state and typically a very positive mental state.

Just before bed and when you first wake up in you in a theta brain wave. This is why it is so important to make conscious decisions of what you are filling your mind with during these periods of time.

Back to my first question, Why do you need to put vision boards in your bedroom? Because it is a great visual representation of imagery of your future life, which starts to then embed new neural pathways in your subconscious mind and then into your long term memory while you drift off into sleep. When you fall asleep at night, your brain is working out ways to achieve these goals. When you wake up in the morning, you roll out of bed and the first thing you see is your vision board and goals, you are setting up your day for success and it is keeping you on track.

Challenge Take note of what you do when you first wake up tomorrow morning. Do you check your phone? If you check your phone first thing in the morning, then what are you checking? Are you filling up your mind with news or social media? Are you empowering others to shape your brain and lens of the world when you first wake up? Don’t worry, you are not alone. I was guilty of this too, until I learnt the science behind the brain. My challenge is tomorrow, try owning the morning and instead look at something inspiring. When you roll out of bed, could you glance at your vision board instead?

How do you create a vision board?

Making a vision board is more than cutting pictures and putting it on the board. It is more about taking some time to work out what legacy you want to leave behind, how do you want to feel everyday, and what does success truly look like for you? For me, success is a peaceful, calm and happy life. So I do everything in my power to make sure this is how I feel. For example, I moved out of the ‘big smoke’ to a small country surf town to aid in this goal. The power comes from setting goals that truly aligns with your values and dreams. Not anyone else’s. When you are aligned to the right goals, you will notice you are putting more effort into the things that are of importance in your life and eventually moving you closer to your desired life.

The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps – we must step up the stairs.

How to create a digital vision board or dream board?

Let's get started, with creating a beautiful vision board in Canva. We will show you in 7 easy steps to create your magical life online.

Step 1: Create a Pinterest board first

Create a private board on Pinterest and give it a fun title. For example ’My Dream Life,' 'My Magical Life,' or 'Manifesting these goals.' You can have a look at our example on Pinterest.

Start pinning images that are in alignment with your goals, your vision and the way you want to feel in these following 12 months. Consider all buckets of life that we will cover over this journey: health, relationships, business, finances, education, spirituality, charity and any other important areas of your life.

Include sayings, images and quotes that spark joy!

Majority of the things you pin should be images, to increase the impact on your neural pathways of your brain and subconscious mind. Having a few positive affirmations and words are great, just as long as it's not all quotes.

Magic tip: If you feel stuck on setting “feel-good” goals, we have a  'Future Self Meditation’ and Journal Prompts that can help you brainstorm and unlock your dreams.

Step 2: Create a folder to store your images

Create a folder on your google drive or dropbox and save your top images to that folder.

Step 3: Research other stock image houses

If you are finding it hard, to find the perfect image from Pinterest, then we recommend these following free stock image houses that have excellent and FREE high quality photographs!

Step 4: Begin in Canva

Log on to Canva and select the US letter size or the large vertical or horizontal design option. This is a personal preference. I often print mine and put it in a beautiful frame, otherwise you can stick it to your corkboard/pin board or the Polaroid options.

Step 5: Import your images

Upload your images from your dropbox or google drive folder into Canva. Nearly there!

Step 6: Create your grids and look

Go to Elements > Grids and play around with a grid layout until you’re happy with the way it looks and feels.

Step 7: Create your vision

This is the funnest part! Now you get to add in your images, colour background and personality. If you prefer, you can load it up to your desktop or phone as a screen saver. Alternatively you can also print it out and frame it or stick it on your corkboard.

Make sure it’s somewhere where you can see it daily.

You nailed it! Well done. I would love to see what you are creating so please share them on our facebook community group here

Magic tip: Give yourself permission to refine your vision board as you move through the year. Goals and visions change and sometimes the initial idea, sparks a better vision.

Trust yourself and your intuition and go with what feels right for you...

This is your life waiting for you!

* Any art supplies that make you happy

*  Time. Dedicate an hour or more to create your board and visualizing your dreams.

Make sure it’s somewhere where you can see it daily.

Finally have FUN. Pour yourself a cup of tea or glass of wine. Light a candle, play some inspiring music, relax and enjoy the process.

How to create a vision board or dream board with a cork board?

The third option is to create an inspiring space by using a cork board, pin board or simple poster board from the office supply store. You will need:

* Any kind of board

* Scissors

* 3-5 magazines to cut images and quotes

* Photos, quotes and anything else that motivates you

* Any art supplies that make you happy

* Time. Dedicate an hour or more to create your board and visualizing your dreams.

*  Have fun. Pour yourself a cup of tea or glass of wine. Light a candle, play some inspiring music, relax and enjoy the process.

You will want to go through the magazines first and cut out images, words or photos that are aligned to your dreams, making a big pile.

Then you need to get really specific with things you can't find in the magazines. For example if its a podcast you want to go on or a charity you want to raise money for, you will need to find digital images of those, and then print them out.

Make this a real art project and let your creativity flow.

Place it all on your board first, before you start using the glue stick. Better still use double sided tape or pins, as our plans can change throughout the year. We want to have some flexibility if something on your vision board no longer aligns with your dream life.

Finally tap into the consciousness, use the Future Self Guided Meditation in our program so you listen to the whispers, intuition and find your inspiration.

Majority of the things you pin should be imaged, to increase the impact on the neural pathways of your brain and subconscious mind. Having a few positive affirmations and words are great, just as long as it's not all quotes.

Magic tip: If you feel stuck on setting “feel-good” goals, enrol in our program and play the 'Future Self Meditation.' After this 10 minute guided meditation, journal down all the positive feelings and let them pour out onto paper.

Once you’ve clarified your vision and made an effective vision board, you should look at it quite often. By doing this you will create the right neural pathways for your brain and also say “Yes” whenever you see an opportunity. As you think of new goals and motivations, don't hesitate to add to it your vision board. Your vision board should be flexible and should incorporate new concepts or goals as you move throughout your life.

It is encouraged that you make a new vision board every 6 months to make sure it is current, makes you accountable and it is meeting your goals. So lets get to it! Your vision board doesn’t need to be perfect and can absolutely be a work in progress. Every individual's vision board will be novel and individual, so make an effort not to contrast with others or judge the outcomes.  We are all here to support each other! Have a great time, be open and enthusiastic, and see what happens! The world is full of surprises.
